    Calspan has been in the business of supporting the U.S. government with unbiased crash investigations and research since the 1970s. Governmental statistical analysis programs such as the National Automotive Sampling Survey (NASS) and many other special studies rely on Calspan’s dedicated and seasoned staff to produce timely and accurate real-world crash research.



    CISS Case Reviewer provides support in the performance of the quality control review process of cases selected by the Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS).  The case reviewer will perform these duties as a member of Zone Center Team and will assist the Principal Sampling Unit (PSU) Team Coordinator as directed.  This position requires participation in Special Projects on an as-needed basis.  Basic Training for this position will be provided at an off-site location to be determined.

    • Conduct quality control review of CISS cases incorporating comparative evaluation of crash data documented in cases using hardcopy documentation, and photographic images with electronic data entry to ensure accurate correlation between data sources.
    • Analyze crash details to ensure proper depiction of crash circumstances shown on scene diagrams such as location of vehicle point of impact & final rest, and objects contacted.
    • Assess vehicle damage and apply principles related to the Collision Deformation Classification (CDC) guideline and the WinSmash speed reconstruction program.
    • Evaluate photographic images using the CISS Digital Photography Guidelines Manual to ensure compliance with requirements.
    • Assess safety systems for performance and use.
    • Resolve electronic edit checks.
    • Complete case review assignments within the timeframe stipulated by the Program Manager.
    • Provide written feedback to the Program Manager and appropriate Team Coordinator on the quality of the cases reviewed that includes the indentification of case deficiencies and recommended solutions
    • Interact with members of the CISS Zone Center Team in support of developing problem solving methods through weekly meetings
    • Support the rollout and execution of Special Projects including travel to off-site locations; attend NHTSA mandatory meetings


    Preferred Education / Experience:

    • Associates or Bachelors Degree
    • 3+ years in related discipline or;
    • A combination of education and experience equivalent to above

    Preferred Knowledge / Ability: 

    • Previous knowledge of the NASS Electronic Data System and applied coding conventions
    • Knowledge of crash dynamics
    • Knowledge of digital photography
    • Willingness and aptitude to learn
    • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
    • Ability to travel as required by contract
