Calspan’s Subsonic, Transonic Wind Tunnel, is the only independently owned and operated wind tunnel in the United States. The Model Engineer will work with customers to design and integrate wind tunnel models into Calspans transonic wind tunnel located in Buffalo, New York.

Due to security requirements, this position requires US Citizenship

  • Design and analyze wind tunnel (WT) models. Develop CAD models and manufacturing drawings of wind tunnel models. Perform stress analysis. Select model materials based on loads and design.  Assess model safety of flight requirements. Create build instructions.  Interface with manufacturing to ensure manufacturability and design compliance.  Design model components to facilitate efficient in tunnel model configuration changes. Develop costs and lead times.
  • Design and specify wind tunnel model/balance/tunnel Interfaces: Work with customer to select model scale and force balance given anticipated aerodynamic loading.  Select stings and adaptors to achieve desired range of motion and model position in the tunnel.  Set balance limits. Establish safe operating limits for WT model Design new model interface components.  Design replacement parts for existing model interface components.
  • Participate in Wind Tunnel Pre-Test Efforts: Manage the assembly of the model at tunnel pre-test facility.  Integrate model/ balance/instrumentation at tunnel pre-test facility.  Resolve model build up issues. Coordinate with machine shop to facilitate model integration, calibrates balance and prepares model for testing.
  • Develop new applications and test procedures: Document and maintain pertinent work instructions.  Create, support & maintain engineering data and/or drawings, including layouts, three-dimensional models, and structural analyses. Ensure designs and data/analyses/drawings are accurate, integrated, clearly communicated and complete.


Preferred Education / Experience:

  • Bachelors degree and 5+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline;
  • 5+ years of wind tunnel model design experience
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to above;
  • Due to the security requirements for this position, US Citizenship is required

Preferred Knowledge / Ability:

  • Agile, result oriented team player with the ability to collaborate with customers
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into mechanical specifications for design and manufacturing of models and model/tunnel interfaces
  • Proficient in Autodesk Inventor or Similar 3D Modeling Software
  • Strong skills in the area of wind tunnel model design and verfication
  • Strong understanding of model design requirements defintion and management
  • Ability to develop and maintain drawing configurations and revisions
  • Strong analytical skills, knowledge of stress analysis and FEA
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and manage abstract and concrete variables
